CHRISTMAS lights will be brightening up Cradley Heath when they are switched on this weekend by the Mayor of Sandwell.

On Saturday (November 12), Mayor Councillor Julie Webb will hit the big red button at 5pm signalling Santa Claus that Cradley Heath is ready for the big day.

But she's not the only one who could be being applauded as Sandwell Council are on the hunt for performers who will share their talents with festive solos, sing-alongs and dances on the outdoor stage.

The organisers are also giving away 10 free stalls to charities and not-for-profit organisations to add to their Christmas appeal.

Rowley Regis town leader Councillor Susan Eaves said: “This is always a popular event for local people with big crowds being attracted every year to the High Street switch-on. There will be the usual fun and frivolity for everyone with fairground rides, stalls and entertainment.”

The festivities at the switch-on will also include a festive market, fun fair, charity stalls, and more free entertainment on stage from 3pm to 7pm in the High Street.

Local people interested in taking part in these activities should contact Fran Wilde of Walk Works CIC for further information on 07952 563725.

Later in the month, the mayor will also switch on Oldbury on at Thursday, November 24, and the deputy mayor, councillor Susan Downing, will switch the lights on in Blackheath on Saturday, November 26.

Mayor Cllr Julie Webb said: "I am really looking forward to these events which always attract a lot of families.

"It will be a pleasure to see so many people enjoying themselves. I would like to thank all of the community associations and organisations supporting these events."
