Plans to bring back Cradley Heath speedway have moved a further step closer with a planning application in the final stages before being presented to Dudley Council.

After more than ten years away from the track, campaigners have now reached the culmination of a campaign to bring the club back to the borough.

Bob Edwards of Cradley Raising Aid Saving Heathens (CRASH) has reported the hold-ups on the application have now been dealt with and following a site inspection, they feel the council's concerns can be successfully addressed.

Rumours have surfaced the new site may be on green belt behind Halesowen Harriers football club. Although members are still remaining tight-lipped as to the exact location.

Cradley and Foxcote councillor Gaye Partridge said: "We are calling for information to be put in the public domain as soon as possible.

"The green belt land is of archaeological interest as arrowheads from the Iron Age have been found there and previous planning applications for that site have been rejected because of it.

"We are enthusiastic about Speedway returning, as it is a jewel in our sporting crown, but this is another disastrous consultation once again by Dudley Council."

Bob Edwards said: "We are currently trying to set up a meeting with council officials to just dot the i's and cross the t's.

"The meeting can't come quickly enough for us, as we are keen to make real progress as soon as possible."

Meanwhile, members are urging fans to continue signing the petition, which will be handed to council planners, to show the level of support for the Heathens returning back to the borough.

Following the huge success of the paper-based petition, with over 2,000 signatures being collected at the Grand Prix in Cardiff, members have launched an online petition at www.gopetition.com/petitions/bring-back-cradley-speedway.html Set up just a few days ago, the petition has already attracted more than 1,200 signatures from all over the world and campaigners are hoping all fans will log on and show their support.

On Bob's submission on the petition website, he states the proposal is permitted by the council's Unitary Development Plan clause relating to green belt land, which could suggest the team could soon be relocating to the rumoured site.

A recent poll on the Halesowen News website revealed overwhelming support for the Heathens return with 93 per cent backing plans.

We want to hear your views as proposals go into the final stages. What do you think about this possible site?

Glad to hear that a councilor is enthusiastic about speedway returning.

Cradley Heathens back on track would clearly be a massive boost to the area. Whatever site is eventually revealed, we have seen that a lot of work has gone into identifying the location by professional consultants scouring the borough.

Speedway is perfectly acceptable in a green belt location. Planning guidance supports it and there are precedents in other parts of the country.

The vast majority of people want speedway to return. If a place has been found then an opportunity is being presented for Dudley Council to properly support it. If you keep ruling out places because it is next to houses or it's in a field, then where will be left? The benefits outweigh any problems.

Lets go for it!

I really believe that it would be fantastic to have the speedway return to Cradley. However, I also believe that the original site was the best. Building on a green belt is not the answer. What needs to be considered is the residents and also the importance of the land where it will be located. There are more suitable sites around Cradley rather than on a green belt area. Lets hope that Dudley Council weigh up the pros and cons properly. But judging by other consultations it looks like HOPE is an unrealistic word here.

To 'Daisy Chayne'. The actual site has been identified by a team of professional consultants at considerable expense. Naturally, the proximity of local residents and importance of the land have been considered, along with all other relevant factors.

Whilst i am pleased that councillor Partridge is enthusiastic towards the return of Cradley Heathens,I do not believe there have been any previous planning applications for this particular site, reference Green Belt land there are guidlines within current planning regulations that allow for Sport to be allowed in/on Green Belt land providing it is a proven outdoor Sport, i think Speedway is well qualified in that respect,I also believe it will be better for the area than its current use of persons using it to dump burnt out vehicles from time to time.I look forward to the return of the Heathens which is a name respected Worldwide,What else in Dudley is known Worldwide??.

It would be fantastic if we see a return of the Heathens.I will certainly travel down to Dudley on occasion of Belle Vue's visits.Last time i visited Cradley was 1980 and what a walk down memory lane it would be for me.Good luck and i urge the local council to rubber stamp Cradley's return.

I would like to add my support for the return of Cradley Speedway. Thousands of people want this sport back where it belongs. It would bring more tourist to the area from other

tracks, also get the kids off the streets, ( most tracks now let kids in for free ) and I would vote for any councillor that favours the Planning Application. Bring the Heathens home.

As a Dudley Borough Resident I feel that our local council could do far more to give the community the sporting and family friendly facilities it so desperately needs. The demise of Cradley Speedway is well documented and I feel that our local councillors should hang their heads in shame in allowing this once great club to remain stagnant for so many years. It attracted genuine world wide interest attracting internationally recognised sporting personalities and something that the borough was justifiably proud of. It seems to me the supporters through CRASH have worked hard over many years to find a solution; when surely this should have been the responsibility of our councillors. I am confident that attitudes will change just as soon as Cradley Speedway is back on its feet again and generating positive press and publicity for the area.

While I can understand that finding a site can be difficult the reality is that it is within the Councillors gift to resolve the problem, they simply chose not too, preferring to hide behind excuses and endless red tape. I would venture to suggest they have a duty to remedy the situation - they have after all had many years to do this already; persistent weasel words count for nothing.

I am all for protecting the greenbelt and irrespective of the location the greenbelt area in question is already subject to misuse, burnt out cars, littering, kids on quad bikes etc. Should the Club be located at the site the News is suggesting - then 3 cheers to them and I would support the application and hope Dudley Council and the Halesowen News do too; thats the real community spirit of working together with Crash to remedy a whole range of problems and put the borough back on the international sporting scene.

It will be a travesty of Dudley Council do not fully support this planning application when it is submitted. All Councillors will be fully aware of the massive support for the return of speedway to the Borough and the onus is on them to recognise this support and make take positive action to bring this campaign to fruition.

It's always interesting how all those who welcome the return of the speedway live miles away. When the track was in its original position over three miles away we could hear the noise of the bikes and the announcements. I dread to think what it will be like less than half a mile away. The proposed site would sit in a natural bowl focusing the noise at residential properties sited all around. No mention has been made of the access to the proposed site, the stourbridge road is busy enough as it is and Toys lane/ Oldnall Road certainly will not cope with the increase. With all the talk of urban regeneration surely there are brownfield sites that could be utilised without taking more greenfield land out of use especially a site of historic interest.

I HAVE JUST READ THE ARTICLE IN LAST WEEKS NEWS AND FEEL I HAVE TO COMMENT ON COUNCILLOR CROMPTONS STATEMENT. IT WORRIES ME THAT SOMEONE IN SUCH AN INFLUENTIAL POSITION IS ONCE AGAIN SO ILL INFORMED ABOUT SPEEDWAY. HE SAYS HE IS CONCERNED ABOUT "A LOT OF NOISE FOR A LOT OF PEOPLE & A LOT OF TRAFFIC".SPEEDWAY AS FANS KNOW, IS ALMOST ALWAYS ONLY ONCE A WEEK FOR A FEW HOURS, I WOULD SUGGEST THIS IS A SMALL INCONVENIENCE WHEN YOU CONSIDER THE ENTERTAINMENT IT GIVES TO MANY PEOPLE AND GIVE THE BORED KIDS OF TODAY SOMETHING TO LATCH ON TO. IF THERE WERE TO BE HOUSES BUILT ON GREEN BELT SUCH AS THIS, AS PROPOSED BY THE GOVERNMENT, THEN THERE WOULD BE EVEN MORE NOISE, EVEN MORE TRAFFIC AND MORE POLLUTION FOR "A LOT OF PEOPLE". PLEASE GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT AND STOP BEING SO NEGATIVE WHEN IT SUITS YOU!!

I am shocked to hear of plans to build a new speedway on this area of greenbelt. Especially as I have just purchased a brand new property less than 500 yards from this site and I feel the noise will be intolerable, as well as affecting the prices of these near by properties. If I had known about this building proposal a few weeks ago I would not have bought this house. I am very upset at the thought of my new house being plagued by the noise of roaring engines the shouting of crowds, especially as I am a first time buyer. I am not against speedway at all but surely there are better sites where there will not be as much disruption to peoples lives. Who wants this right on their door step?

I would be quite happy to have Cradley Speedway in my back garden never mind 500 yards away. As for the noise well yes it is noisy but its once a week for no more than 3 hours. And were not talking football crowds, we'd be more than happy with crowds of 1-2 thousand and thats pushing it for speedway. I would think having a well run sucessful sports stadium 500 yard from your house would have to be more appealing to house prices than some down troden waste land with burnt out cars and hooligans hanging about. Cradley Speedway will want to work with the local residents, we need you as this might be the last chance we get to bring back one of the most sucessful clubs to british spedway. There are no better sites, weve been looking for 11 years. You never know instead of sitting at home listening to the noise you might want join in and start supporting. Theres no trouble at speedway matches its a family sport. Just dont knock us down before we can even stand up.
