CD - Konk - The Kooks

3:52pm Friday 25th April 2008

AFTER the success of their first album Inside In Inside Out, The Kooks raised expectations somewhat.

They were always a bit too poppy to be a credible indie band, and a bit too indie to spend too long in the charts, but they seemed content to produce an album of solid music with a few breakaway singles, which really lodged firmly in your mental jukebox.

Listening to Konk is essentially like putting the first album on repeat, except this time round it's all filler and no stand-out moments. In fact after a few tracks I found myself humming She Moves in Her Own Way in the hope of discovering it somewhere in amongst the sea of samey songs on offer.

Which isn't to say that Konk is bad, just that it feels a little uninspired and I'd hoped for an improvement on Inside In Inside Out.

You might have to wait for a third outing to make your mind up about the Kooks.
