THE Mystery Machine brought spooky fun aplenty when it rolled in to the Black Country this week with a brand new Scooby Doo stage show.

Scooby-Doo! The Mystery of the Pyramid, which opened at Wolverhampton Grand Theatre last night (Thursday), is a real treat for both young and old fans of the 1970s TV show.

The production, which features the signature theme song and a moving Mystery Machine on stage, remains brilliantly faithful to the classic cartoon.

Authentic cartoon sound effects, vibrant 70s costumes and hair-dos and bucket loads of physical comedy are used to great effect to bring to life the world's most famous Great Dane and his pals Shaggy, Fred, Velma and Daphne as they dodge mummies and try to solve the mystery of Pharaoh Hatchepsout’s pyramid - somewhere in the Sahara Desert.

Clue-hunting addicts Velma, Fred and Daphne are fabulously depicted by Louise Wright, Josh little and Julia Cave respectively - complete with authentic American cartoon-esque accents.

While Douglas Walker, Stuart Vincent and Eleanor O'Grady as treasure hunter Otto, his singing Egyptian assistant Ben Sief and enchanting Egyptologist Mira lead a number of musical highlights.

But the show belongs to food-obsessed scaredy cats - Scooby and Shaggy, both wonderfully brought to life by Eddie Arnold and Danny Stokes respectively.

As well as looking the part, thanks to his functional and aesthetically accurate furry Warner Bros outfit, Arnold's Scooby has the mannerisms of the 2D TV top dog down to a T; while Stokes excels, perhaps fractionally even more so, as colourful sidekick Shaggy. His goofy accent is spot on and he enthrals throughout the 90-minute show.

Presented by Warner Bros and Chas Elliot for CTI Productions, Scooby-Doo! The Mystery of the Pyramid runs at The Grand until Sunday July 20.

Shows start at 6.30pm on Friday and Saturday. Matinee shows also run on Saturday from 2.30pm and Sunday from 1pm and 4.30pm.
