A STAND up comic who is travelling penniless from Land's End to Edinburgh on a 120 gig charity tour is stopping off for a night in Stourbridge.

Damian Kingsley is carrying out the mammoth comedy trek to raise money for the bad housing and homelessness charity Shelter and will make an appearance at the Fitz of Laughter Comedy Club on Friday (June 3).

After already raising £9,000 on the ‘Knock Knock Stand Up Comedy Tour’, the comic will hope to add to his tally when he takes to Katie Fitzgerald’s marquee stage with his collection bucket in hand.

Wayne Beese, the club’s resident compere, said: “We are delighted to be able to add Damian to the bill for Friday's show.

“It is fantastic what he is doing and he has raised an incredible amount for Shelter already.

“Hopefully we can help him raise a bit more cash for a very worthy cause.”

Damian isn’t using any money or public transport on his journey and is hoping to be given shelter, food and maybe a few lifts on the road to Edinburgh, while in return he will be telling jokes to anyone, anywhere, in return for the basic necessities so many people have to do without every day.

He said: “It so important we raise money and awareness for Shelter, and I feel privileged to have the opportunity to do this.”

Damian will hold at least one gig every day, with travel between gigs of up 12 miles. From July 15 until August 4 Damian will perform the Knock Knock show as part of the free fringe in Edinburgh - with all donations also going to Shelter.

He added: “I am as worried as I am excited about the tour. Out of 120 gigs, lots of which don't normally host comedy, I'm sure there will be some tough nights.

“I keep having these recurring visions of me dying onstage in a village in the middle of nowhere, trying and failing to sleep in a tent, worried that the farmer who owns the field I'm in will appear with a shotgun, then having to lug all my stuff 14 miles to the next gig like an unfunny wandering minstrel.”

Julie Bolt, Shelter’s head of community and events, said: “We’re hugely thankful to Damian for undertaking such an extraordinary challenge to raise funds for Shelter.

“All of the money he raises will go directly towards making sure no one has to fight bad housing or homelessness on their own.

“We wish him the best of luck on the tour and encourage everyone to go along if they get the opportunity.”

Tickets for June’s Fitz of Laughter club – also starring Sean Percival, Jellybean Martinez and James Cook – cost £10 and are available from www.skiddle.com/e/12557320.
