HAGLEY husband and wife team Leon and Rachel Davies were this week starring opposite each other in West Bromwich Operatic Society’s production of The Producers.

The all-singing all-dancing couple are no strangers to sharing the stage and have starred alongside each other numerous times on the Black Country operatic circuit.

In this latest outing for the pair, who have both been acting since their primary school days, Leon plays Leo Bloom - an accountant with dreams of becoming a Broadway producer; while Rachel stars as Leo's love interest - Swedish bombshell actress Ulla.

Leon, a senior lecturer in optometry at Aston University, Birmingham, began his amateur acting career at the age of eight; while Rachel's first show - which she starred in at the age of nine - was the TAB Operatic Society's Finian's Rainbow in which her future husband also appeared.

Former King Edward VI College student Leon has performed in more than 60 productions across the West Midlands. He first joined WBOS for their 1987 production of Oliver! at the Alexandra Theatre; he was also a founding member of WBOS's youth theatre.

Rachel, a peripatetic music teacher for Worcestershire Youth Music, has an equal passion for the stage. The talented performer auditioned for the role of Ulla in The Producers back in August when she was eight months pregnant.

Previously she has appeared in WBOS's productions of Summer Holiday and the Witches of Eastwick. Her other Black Country operatic credits include: Maria in West Side Story, Lola in Copacabana, Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street, Sarah in Our House, Ariel in Footloose and Sarah Brown in Guys and Dolls.

The Producers runs at the New Alexandra Theatre, Station Street, Birmingham, until Saturday November 26.
