THE REP is hoping to enchant theatregoers once again this Christmas with its staging of seasonal classics - The Snowman and Sleeping Beauty.

Despite undergoing a huge makeover at its base in Broad Street - The Birmingham Repertory Theatre has laid on a packed festive programme that promises to bring the magic of Christmas to life.

The theatre is staging Sleeping Beauty at the nearby Crescent Theatre by Brindley Place until January 14 as well as bringing back Raymond Brigg's classic Christmas tale The Snowman, which runs at International Convention Centre in Broad Street from December 16 to 31.

Fairytale romance and weird and wonderful characters are guaranteed in Rufus Norris's fantastical take on Sleeping Beauty which is being billed as grisly as a Roald Dahl story and as 'Grimm' as any of the Brothers' fairytales.

Based on the original story by Charles Perrault, the quirky family-friendly musical suitable for youngsters seven and over is told from the point of view of the mischievous old Fairy Goody, a grubby, smelly old sprite who casts a spell that sends Princess Beauty into a deep, deep sleep - leaving the audience wondering if she will ever awaken.

While The Snowman, based on the classic book by Raymond Briggs and animated film directed by Dianne Jackson, has been thrilling REP audiences since 1993.

Featuring music and lyrics by Howard Blake, the show follows a young boy whose snowman comes to life on Christmas Eve and takes him on a night time adventure during which they meet dancing penguins, reindeer and many more of the Snowman's seasonal friends.
