EAST met West in a vibrant fusion, as The King and I quick-stepped its way onto the Wolverhampton Grand Theatre stage.

The latest touring adaption of the much-loved Rogers and Hammerstein’s classic tells the tale of British governess Anna, who is given the task of teaching the King of Siam’s many children.

West End and Broadway star Josefina Gabrielle gives a fantastic performance as the Mary Poppins-esque governess, full of charm, elegance and poise.

While Ramon Tikaram portrays a compelling and endearing King, who is struggling with his desire to embrace western ideas.

Together, the lead pair convincingly convey their cultural clash and tumultuous relationship, which ultimately leads to their unspoken affection.

The supporting cast are also superb, with Tup-Tim (Claire-Marie Hall) and Lun Tha (Adrian Li Donni) showcasing real poignant moments and standout vocals on stage as the young lovers.

The Act II ballet ‘The Small House of Uncle Thomas’ is also mesmerising, if not slightly a little too long for the show which runs at two-and-a-half hours.

But with the entire show played out against a visually stunning backdrop of giant gold Buddhas, vibrant colours and even shadow puppetry and with a heart-warming story and a memorable score including Shall We Dance?, Getting to Know You, Hello, Young Lovers and I Whistle a Happy Tune, the show should not be missed by any Rogers and Hammerstein fans.

The King and I runs until Saturday. For more information call the box office on 01902 429212 or visit grandtheatre.info
