CREATIVE artists across Stourbridge are standing up for the children of Syria during a varied programme of events over 11 days in November.

Under the banner of ‘Artists 4 Syria’, artists, musicians and writers from the town have banded together to organise a number of events between November 5 and 15 to help fundraise for the Syria Campaign.

Events taking place throughout the non-political campaign include an art exhibition, a choral event, a 5km run, yoga sessions, a poetry evening and a quiz night.

Eddy Morton, co-owner of Wollaston pub Katie Fitzgerald’s, said: “Having been appalled by the recent scenes in Aleppo, Syria, of children under constant fear of death from bombardment, lack of food, at times water and power, we decided to form a group – Artists 4 Syria.

“From this, proposals were made for a fundraiser, which then grew into a whole series of events run by many different people in Stourbridge.

“The aim is to reach out to the children of Syria, in the name of humanity and decency, and show that our town cares.”

The campaign’s first event takes place on Saturday, November 5, with a 5km run around Stourbridge, starting at 1pm, with music from 4pm at the Enville Road pub.

This will be followed by a choral event and art exhibition from 2pm until 6pm on Sunday, November 6, at St John’s Church, while a sponsored walk to the top of Cadair Idris – the poet’s mountain – is planned for Wednesday, November 9.

At 7pm on the same day, the cellar bar in Katie Fitzgerald’s will be used to host a yoga session, before a poetry evening – including a guest speaker, performance and Q&A – will take place on Thursday, November 10.

A holistic day will take place between 10am and 5.30pm on Saturday, November 12, and budding cyclists will be getting on their bikes for a 50km cycle, starting and finishing at Katie Fitzgerald’s, on Sunday, November 13, where live music will be played from 4pm.

The final two events take place on Tuesday, November 15, at the pub, with a meditation event from 7pm, which will be followed by Pete Lowe and Ian Marrey hosting the regular quiz at 9pm.

All money raised during the events, with some still to be planned, will go to the Syria Campaign, which helps organisations like the White Helmets work directly on the front line.
