SEEING legendary former chart stars Miles Hunt and Jonn Penney take to the stage in a Stourbridge pub is something fans of 1990s bands The Wonder Stuff and Ned’s Atomic Dustbin could only dream of.

The pair hadn’t shared a stage for nearly 30 years.

But on Wednesday night at The Duke William pub in Stourbridge - as the indie rock frontmen got together for a rare acoustic show ahead of their forthcoming reunion tour - 40-something music fans briefly felt like teenagers again, singing along to acoustic versions of Don’t Let Me Down (Stuffies) and Grey Cell Green (Ned’s).

More recent and more mature numbers also formed part of the set at the intimate ‘secret’ gig held in the upstairs function room of the Coventry Street pub - but the singalong oldies were the clear favourites of the evening.

Stuffies frontman Miles was on sparkling form - storytelling and belting out his proudest numbers, old and new.

While acoustic versions of tracks by Ned’s singer Jonn and guitarist Rat brought equally large, satisfied smiles to the lucky audience members - most of whom had won tickets to the one-off gig which was staged to mark the launch of a celebratory beer ‘Ned’s Wonder’ - brewed by Miles’s cousin Will Hunt’s brewing company, Froth Blowers Brewing Co, in honour of the bands.

As someone who never saw the Ned’s or The Wonder Stuff perform back in their heyday, I felt like I’d been given a second chance to experience just some of the magic surrounding these two bands.

Roll on the forthcoming Love From Stourbridge tour, which will see both bands playing 75-minute sets of their greatest hits and fan favourites and which is sure of offer up even more enchanting performances from the guys who will always have a special place in the hearts of Stourbridge musos.

The 12-date double headline UK tour, which will also include a guest DJ set from Graham Crabb of Pop Will Eat Itself, includes two nights at Birmingham’s O2 Academy on Saturday April 14 and Sunday April 15.

Saturday’s show has unsurprisingly already sold out but tickets remain available for Sunday and can be bought from ticketmaster.co.uk.

Ned’s Wonder, a golden ale with floral start and subtle caramel finish, will be available at gigs during the tour or people can buy bottles directly from Froth Blowers Brewing Co.
