Luke Bracey has revealed that the Point Break remake is very different from the original film.

The Australian actor takes the role of Keanu Reeves’ character Johnny Utah in the new movie opposite Edgar Ramirez as his antagonist Bodhi, previously played by Patrick Swayze.

He said the new version honours Kathryn Bigelow’s 1991 original: “The original is one of my favourite movies. This one is completely different. We’ve taken it on a more global scale.

“It’s got transnational corporations and features environmental terrorism, there’s surfing, snowboarding, wingsuiting and rock-climbing. It’s bigger, better and more bad-ass really.”

Luke, who recently starred in The Best Of Me alongside James Marsden, said the role was a dream come true.

“I’ve seen the original about 1,000 times so I could just go to my memory bank and pull out any quote word for word from the original,” he continued. “This was an absolute thrill for me. It’s once in a lifetime dream, and it was a dream for seven months.”

He also said his alter-ego isn’t a copy of Keanu’s character: “There’s a part of Johnny Utah that I like from Keanu’s performance but this is a new Utah – he comes from a different background and story. It would be disrespectful for me to mimic Keanu. This is a new and updated version of Johnny Utah.”

The 25-year-old also got to work with Ray Winstone.

“That was a thrill and a half,” he said. “My mother’s English so I know a lot about English culture and I’m drawn to it, so for me to work with Ray was absolutely awesome. He’s such a lovely guy. We had a lot of laughs and he told great stories.”

Point Break, which is directed by Ericson Core, will be released in UK cinemas in August.
