After both contestants were told they might be axed, they were stunned when hosts Ant and Dec told them they would both be leaving.

Martin, who spent 14 days in the jungle camp after entering the competition late with DJ Danny Baker, left the jungle first and said he had been on an emotional rollercoaster.

He said: “I had no idea it would be anything like that, the people and the experience, how it affects you. It surpassed all my expectations.”

Martin, who clashed with Danny and ex-EastEnders actor Larry Lamb in the camp, said he knew it would be difficult to join a group that had already become close, adding: “There were additional complications with Danny so it was quite tough.

“There is a thing of wanting to be liked which comes from being badly bullied at school.

“The jungle taught me that if you’re just yourself people will like you.”

Of Larry, who was eliminated yesterday, he said: “I never had a problem with Larry but I think he had a problem with me. He was the patriarch and had gathered 10 people around him and he thought I was a bit of a threat, which I was never going to be.

“He made it clear I wasn’t going to be one of the group.”

Wayne, who spent 21 days in the jungle as an original member of the camp, told the hosts he was still shocked two people were booted from the show.

He added: “I was so nervous but everyone in there made it a pleasure. I didn’t expect to have such a great time.”

Bridge, who cried on the show when he spoke about missing his wife Frankie and his children, said: “I spend every day with the kids and the missus. I will probably get ripped when I get out of here for crying on TV.”

The sports star was frequently terrified by animals and insects on the show but said the competition had helped him conquer his fear of spiders and he would be able to deal with them when he got home as a result.

He said: “I ain’t afraid of spiders now, we used to argue over who would get rid of them but now I will.”

After his interview with the show’s hosts he was reunited with Frankie and the pair shared a hug and a kiss before posing for photographers.

I’m A Celebrity continues on Saturday at 9.30pm on ITV.
