Money made clear, provided by the FSA

Whether your finances are a bit under the weather or fighting fit, it's always a good idea to keep track of your money. Do you know what's coming in, and where it all goes to?

Would you be able to find money in a hurry if you had to pay an unexpected bill, for example? Our easy steps below can help you to take stock of your day-to-day finances and, once you know where you stand, follow our tips on how to make more of your money.

 Maximise your income

Are you are entitled to benefits? See the government's Directgov or the Citizens Advice Bureau's Adviceguide websites. More than £2 billion of benefits go unclaimed every year.

If you have a child, using the parenting calculators can help you work out how much you may be able to claim. Tips on how to Maximise Your Income.

 Budgeting and taking stock

Keep a spending diary - to find out where your money goes, try every day for a week to write down the cost of each item you buy. We sometimes buy things because they are convenient - but they may cost more than you think. Then, you'll be able to work out your budget - use our Budget calculator to help you. The FSA gives tips on Budgeting and taking stock.

 Review your direct debits

Are you paying regularly for unwanted services? Think of any services that gave you a free introductory offer and now you pay full price for. Are you paying for gym membership or magazine subscription that you no longer use?

 Check if you're covered already

Your home contents insurance may cover you for loss of credit cards or other personal belongings (such as mobile phones) while away from home. Or maybe your employer offers health or travel insurance as part of your benefits package? Do you know if your bank account includes any free insurance?

If you are paying for an extended warranty - many are sold to us when we buy an electrical item - check if any of its cover is offered by your home contents insurance. Consider if the warranty is value for money.
