Healthy pupils at an Oldbury primary school have become stars of the small screen.

Youngsters at St Francis Xavier School, in McKean Road, are appearing on the Healthier Living programme on Teachers' TV as part of a series marking Healthy Schools week.

The school is one of four chosen for the series from across the country, highlighting the fact it is one of the healthiest in the region.

Radical changes which have been introduced include lunchtimes with new play equipment, play leaders and a healthy eating club, while an after-school club has forged links with a supermarket to promote the use of Fairtrade ingredients in their cookery.

Pupils now grow their own vegetables, energy around the schools is saved and links have been forged with an Indian school to sell Fairtrade items for charity.

Councillor Ian Jones, cabinet member for Children and Young people, said: "It is fantastic the hard work at the school has been acknowledged in this way."
