Road users urged to stay safe as nights darken

PEDESTRIANS and cyclists are being urged to be ‘bright and be seen’ now the clocks have gone back this weekend.

Dudley Council is supporting the Department for Transport’s THINK! road safety campaign and is reminding people of top tips to help them be seen when out and about on the roads.

Cyclists are reminded to ensure they have clean and working lights at night as well as a rear reflector so as not to break the law.

Other ways to be bright and be seen include wearing brightly coloured or fluorescent clothing that shows up well in daylight and at dusk, wearing reflective gear if out when it’s dark, as well as using accessories, like small armbands and stickers, which all help to improve visibility.

Councillor Judy Foster, Dudley’s cabinet member for transport, said: “Making sure pedestrians and cyclists are easily seen by drivers is important all year round but especially at this time of year when evenings are getting darker.

“Drivers and riders should remember to keep a look out for anyone walking and cycling and pedestrians are reminded to cross in safe and well lit places.”

The council is working with schools, colleges and other groups to raise awareness of the importance of being bright and being seen.
