Man glassed in Blackheath club brawl

A MASS brawl broke out at a Blackheath club after a 27-year-old man had a glass smashed in his face, a court heard.

Paul Clark was viciously hit and then attacked by a number of other men after he walked out of Blackheath Community Club to go for a cigarette.

His attacker, Kevin Grove, aged 26, who is already serving a three year jail term for burglary imposed after the glassing, admitted assault causing actual bodily harm.

A judge at Wolverhampton Crown Court jailed Grove, of Ruskin Avenue, for a year.

Gary Cook, prosecuting, said: “Mr Clark does not remember much about the incident but a steward standing nearby saw a group of people holding back a man who was arguing aggressively."

After being hit, Mr Clark first thought he had been punched but he then heard the smashing of glass and he felt blood on his face.

Someone then shouted "he has glassed him," added Mr Cook and a mass brawl broke out. Mr Clark recalled scuffling with a man before falling to the ground where he was punched and kicked.

Judge Michael Dudley told Grove: "What you did in this altercation was to lose your temper and suddenly grab out for something.

"The first thing that came to hand was a glass that you did not break before pushing it into the face of the other man. You struck him one blow but you took no further part in the general brawl that ensured."

Ben Williams, defending, claimed the incident was prompted by a comment made by Mr Clark, adding: "Whatever the initial provocation the response was out of all perspective.”
