YOUNG bookworms at a Rowley Regis school are top of the class after clinching victory in the area leg of the Sandwell Book Quiz.

The six-strong team competed against 15 other schools in the heats at Blackheath and Oakham libraries, and beat Tividale Hall and Oakham primary schools in the final.

Deputy headteacher Sarah Smith said the year six team had worked very hard, reading the books and answering questions about them and the authors, encouraged by teacher Manjit Virdee and teaching assistant Andrea Bennett.

“It encouraged them to like reading and the quiz raised the profile of reading across the school. It also encouraged good sportsmanship and there was a great atmosphere between the different teams,” she added.
