THE plight of a four-year-old cancer sufferer touched the hearts of a Colley Gate pub darts team which raised £2,500 to give him and his young brother a magical Christmas.

Little George Harrison, who is undergoing radiotherapy and chemotherapy after having a kidney removed, was deluged with gifts from regulars at the Gate pub.

His eight-year-old brother Tyler was also treated to sackfuls of presents and grateful dad Keith Harrison said they had been “overwhelmed.”

George’s classmates and teachers at Caslon Primary School also sent extra special Christmas presents to the reception pupil.

The brave youngster, of Mears Road, Colley Gate, was diagnosed with cancer in October and had a kidney removed in November.

But more cancerous cells were discovered and he has endured weekly chemotherapy ever since. He is also currently undergoing an eight day period of radiotherapy and needed a blood transfusion last week.

Mr Harrison said: “It was the worst nightmare when he was diagnosed, but he is in good hands, the doctors and nurses have been brilliant.

“He is alright, he’s lost a lot of weight, but he’s doing well and is very resilient. Some days you wouldn’t know anything was wrong.”

The 53-year-old single parent, who is also a carer for his father who has Parkinson’s Disease, said he was “so grateful” for the help and support he has had from family and friends.

The darts team he plays for at the Gate thrilled the boys with presents, including an ipad, Playstation and bicycle each, football goalposts, games and clothes - and tickets for the three of them to see the wrestling and have a meal at the NEC in April.

Mr Harrison said: “It was overwhelming - I’m on benefits and I could never have done any of that. I’m so grateful to everyone who’s helped.”

“People like the pub landlady Kerry Prosser and her staff, the darts team and the kids’ Godparents Anthony Worton and Benny Garbett. Daniel Haden and family have been golden and his headteacher Mr Pemberton, the staff at the children’s hospital and the QE, my parents and mother-in-law - everyone has been golden.”
