A BOROUGH mental health charity has launched a new telephone helpline for thousands of vulnerable adults.

Sandwell Mind launched the Sandwell Council funded service this week is expecting more than 5,000 calls in the first year.

Dedicated staff will be on hand to offer a short-term support network to people who have been discharged from hospital with physical or mental health issues and are making the difficult transition back to independent living.

The help line aims to ensure people receive the support they need to remain at home and access relevant services.

Sandwell Mind, Chief Executive, Monica Shafaq, said: “The transition period from hospital discharge to being back at home is a crucial crossroads in an individual’s life and it is something we have been advocating for a long time, so for us to now have the chance and opportunity to support those vulnerable individuals on the road to recovery is fantastic.”

The service requires a referral to be completed by a NHS professional working as part of the hospital discharge process.
