Best friends set to go head to head in charity boxing contest

SIX sets of best friends are preparing to do battle in a series of boxing matches to raise thousands of pounds for Cancer Research UK.

The ‘Fight Club’ style contest, at Benjamins on Sunday March 4, on is being organised by Alan Harris who was inspired after a friend was diagnosed with cancer.

The sold out event, which will see Alan do battle with his best friend Tyrone Cole, aged 42, has already raised £4k with 400 tickets snapped up at £10 each.

Also taking part are pals Ashley Parkes and John McCann, Anthony Shepherd and Robbie Cole, Matt Snip and Paul Morrell, Paul Hale and Adam Edwards and Andy Crehan and Jonjo Murphy.

Alan, a 44-year-old carpenter, said: “We are starting to take it a little bit seriously - it has become a bit of a competition!

“We are all well known characters and I have got people phoning me up every week asking how the training is going.”

The fights, which will run from 5pm till 7.30pm, will be made up of three, two minute rounds over which a professional referee will preside.

All the fighters are training at different gyms, including Golden Gloves in Long Lane, which Alan thanked for supporting the contest.

The event’s main sponsor is Ronnie Broadhurst of Dermagraffix Tattoo Studio in Halesowen.

A raffle will also be held with prizes including a football shirt signed by Fabrice Muamba and there will be music from DJs from 7.30pm till late.

Although tickets are sold out Alan is accepting donations towards the final fundraising total. Anyone interested can call him on 07791 487351.
