Halesowen and Oldbury Thomas Cook staff awaiting redundancy news

STAFF at Thomas Cook shops around the region are waiting to hear if they are to be made redundant.

The huge chain of travel agents, which has shops in Halesowen and Oldbury, is planning savings, including shutting 195 of its 1,069 high street stores, with the loss of 2,500 jobs.

The company has begun a consultation on the closure plan which will affect areas where there is more than one outlet within a community, or where shops are not hitting performance targets.

At the time of going to press no details were available for which stores were set to close.

A company spokesman told The News those details would only be made public after all affected workers had been informed.

Peter Fankhauser, Thomas Cook UK and Ireland’s CEO, said: "It is never easy to make decisions that impact directly on our people, but we also owe it to our customers to shape the business effectively and ensure that, when they book their holiday with us, our administrative costs are as low as possible."
