GO-getting pupils have raised more than £6,000 for charities and to boost activities at their Rowley Regis school.

St Michael’s High School’s Student Voice group organised events including Christmas and summer fairs and supermarket bag packs to raise the cash during the last year.

Head boy Matthew Hadley, aged 16, and Jacob Onions, aged 13, volunteered to have their heads shaved during a celebration evening which raised £400 .

During the evening, held in recognition of the group’s efforts, a £3,000 cheque was presented to Birmingham Children’s Hospital. They have also donated more than £1,000 to Scope, the charity for cerebral palsy, and £2,000 to school funds.

Headteacher Mike Wilkes said: “I am very impressed with their determination and resilience, at a difficult time when money is tight for everybody, they have inspired the school and parents and local community.”

He said the skills and inspiring ideas they had developed were indicative of what the school was trying to do and would help them in adult life.

Student Voice member Melina Kang, aged 15, added: “I never realised that by joining Student Voice it would have such an impact on me as a person. It has helped build my confidence and by fundraising we have all become such a close team. I enjoy every aspect of Student Voice.”

The pupils, from across the school have also interviewed Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris, worked with St Giles Church and other members of the community.

They have even taken part in staff interviews, delivered staff workshops and given presentations to school leadership and governors.
