With picturesque views of snow-capped peaks and a cosy log cabin tucked away in the grounds, my Easter stay at Ludlow’s Fishmore Hall was more like a trip to Switzerland than rural Shropshire thanks to the unseasonal icy temperatures.

But this sophisticated 15-bedroom boutique country house hotel is, thankfully, much closer to home and taking an indulgent breather from daily life was just what the doctor ordered.

From the word go, Fishmore Hall oozes quality – the immaculate décor, exceptional service and wonderful food set it apart from other hotels. Luxurious comfort is the watchword here and our bedroom certainly didn’t disappoint. The contemporary, well-proportioned and opulent room boasted a marble-tiled bath, which was almost big enough to swim in, and a pebble-paved wet room. There were also decadent little touches like homemade biscuits and a proper coffee machine.

It was difficult to drag myself away to the NSpa treatment cabin in the hotel grounds but, once out of the bitterly cold wind, I was so glad I did. Bathed in candlelight, the cabin offers pure escapism with a choice of treatments from hot stone therapy, Indian head massages and mud wraps to facials, manicures and pedicures.

Further indulgence came that evening when we dined in Forelles restaurant, awarded 3 AA rosettes, which offers a six-course Shropshire tasting menu as well as two or three course menus and à la carte options.

Attention to detail is second to none, from the appetising canapés served with pre-dinner drinks to the amuse-bouche between courses, this really is gastronomy at its best. Highlights included cauliflower velouté with curry oil and pine nuts, gnocchi with purple sprouting broccoli and shallots, and bread and butter soufflé with tonka bean ice cream. All were crafted with a delicate touch yet packed with flavour.

After a great night’s sleep in an enormous super-comfy bed, breakfast was also a treat with a good continental buffet spread as well as cooked-to-order full Shropshire breakfasts or lighter options such as smoked salmon and scrambled eggs.

As we headed home, a wedding party were just arriving, eager to get out of the cold and into the handsome Georgian house. I can’t think of a more perfect spot to celebrate a wedding – or indeed any special occasion. I hope to return.
