KNITTING needles are clicking frantically in Halesowen to keep up supplies of baby clothes and blankets for premature and ill babies at Brimingham Women’s Hospital.
The knitting group at Withit Witch - the Halesowen Knitting Centre - has just made its fourth delivery to the special care baby unit and has so far donated 56 blankets, 154 cardigans, 190 hats and 62 pairs of mittens and booties.
Their challenge began a year ago when a group member visited the neonatal unit with her one-year-old son who had been cared for there when he was born.
Withit Witch boss Nici Patchett said: “She asked if there was something she could do to say thank you to the unit asked if she would knit for them.”
The knitting group took up the gauntlet and advertised for helpers at the shop, on Facebook and through word of mouth. Hawne Townswomen's Guild recently donated knitted items.
Most of the garments are used by the neonatal unit as the best way to keep the babies warm, while some are sold at the unit’s monthly table top sales, raising money for items such as breast pumps, triangular pillows and items for the parents’ room.
Mrs Patchett said: “We are always crying out for more people to get involved.”
Anyone interested in helping should contact her at Withit Witch, High Street, or call 0121 550 0201.
