Free canal boat trips and fun day in Halesowen this weekend
11:20am Tuesday 27th August 2013 in News
FAMILIES are being offered free trips down the Dudley No 2 Canal in Halesowen this weekend.
Charity Groundwork West Midlands is holding a fun day at Chancel Way in Halesowen on Saturday, between 10am and 3pm which will include face painting, balloon modelling and a mini zoo.
The fun day is being held in conjunction with the Coombeswood Canal Trust to celebrate recent work Groundwork West Midlands have been doing on behalf of the Dudley Canal Trust to improve the local canal environment as part of the Big Lottery’s Changing Spaces Fund.
Chris Leech, project co-ordinator for Groundwork West Midlands said: “We have been working with Dudley Canal Trust to deliver many improvements along the canal, and as a result it is now good to see local people enjoying the peaceful quality environment.
“The boat trips will be a great way of showing the people the work we have carried out in a fun and enjoyable setting.”
Alan Hazeldine from Dudley Canal Trust added: "We are delighted to have been a partner in this project and to use our electric trip boats to give people of all age groups and backgrounds the opportunity to see the canal and towpath as a pleasant, safe, healthy and clean environment in which to spend their leisure time."
This work has helped to make the canal a safer and more enjoyable place to visit. Many locals now prefer to cycle or walk along the towpaths as it provides them with a quick and healthier route to work.
As part of the improvements local artist Luke Perry was also commissioned to install twenty four pieces of artwork along the canal towpaths that depicted local features and reflected the rich industrial heritage of the area.
The canal improvements also form part of the Making Tomorrow Different challenge set by Groundwork which aims to improve open spaces equivalent to 20 Olympic Parks by the time of the next games in Rio.
The boat trips are expected to last about one hour and free refreshments will be provided for everyone on board.
