Cost of festive lights to Halesowen traders to more than double this year
8:00am Friday 6th September 2013 in News
TRADERS are being urged to dig deep to sponsor this year’s Christmas lights in Halesowen to cover an extra £5,000 needed to refurbish them.
The bombshell was announced at yesterday's chamber of trade meeting and means more then twice the usual amount of money will have to found to ensure the town is lit up for the festive season.
Dudley Council gives £5,000 each year towards the cost and last year the chamber raised just under £4,000 to cover the shortfall.
But the chamber struggles to find sufficient support from businesses to cover the town’s share and chairman Steve Fitzpatrick said having to find around £9,000 could be “make or break”.
Letters will be sent to all the town centre businesses asking them to contribute to the cost of refurbishing the lights, their installation and running costs.
Companies across the town are also invited to sponsor them and for £300 can have their names up in lights on banners beneath the festoons.
The big switch on will be on Saturday November 16 and they will light up the town until the second week in January.
Anyone interested in contributing to the Christmas lights appeal should contact chamber member and manager of the Cornbow Shopping Centre Eve O’Connor on 0121 585 5495.
