A BOOZED-up father who staggered into a door whilst carrying his baby leaving it with cuts and bruising has escaped jail.
The father, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was given a 26 week jail term suspended for two years and ordered 150 hours community service.
Judge Martin Walsh told the man at Wolverhampton Crown Court said: "This was an act of grotesque selfishness because you became completely intoxicated while looking after this child.
"You were so heavily intoxicated while you were carrying the baby you staggered into a door frame causing injury.”
He added: “Fortuitously it was not a significant injury. You breached your responsibilities as a parent and it is fortunate no serious harm was caused to the child."
The father admitted cruelty to a child and he was further ordered to carry out 150 hours unpaid work in the community and placed on supervision for three years.
The judge ruled that nothing can be published that can lead to the identity of the baby.
