Transport police on thew trail of Rowley Regis bike theif

Halesowen News: Do you know this man? Do you know this man?

BRITISH Transport Police are hoping rail passengers with eagle eyes and long memories can identify a man accused of stealing a bike from Rowley Regis two months ago.

Officers released a CCTV image of a man they would like to speak to in connection with the theft which took place on Wednesday, October 2.

PC Ifti Hussain, BTP investigating officer, said: “The victim, a 20-year-old man from Halesowen, secured his silver-coloured ‘Orange’ brand mountain bike in the cycle racks near platform one at the station at about 4pm “When he returned around two hours later, he discovered it had been taken from the cycle racks.

“We have undertaken extensive enquiries already, including speaking to witnesses, circulating images on police systems and reviewing CCTV.

“I am now appealing to members of the public to come forward if they recognise the person pictured as we believe he can assist our enquiries.”

To combat bicycle thefts at rail stations BTP are now using plain clothes officers in a bid to catch thieves red handed.

PC Hussain added: “Unfortunately, bicycles remain a desirable target for many thieves at train stations.

"However, BTP is cracking down on this type of crime and we have a dedicated team of officers specifically focused on tackling this issue.

“We are undertaking plain clothes and high profile operations to catch thieves in the act and thieves should also be aware that most cycle racks are covered by CCTV so it’s only a matter of time before we track you down.

“We are also working closely with cycle and second-hand shops in the area and are monitoring online auction and advertising sites to make it more difficult for thieves to sell on stolen property.”

Anyone with information should call British Transport Police on 0800 40 50 40 or text 61016 quoting the reference WWA/B12 of 28/11/13.
