RESTLESS Dudley Council tenants who want to move home are being invited to a "speed swapping" event to meet other tenants with itchy feet.

The Halesowen event is designed for tenants who are over-crowded and require a bigger property or for those who are looking to downsize.

New Government welfare reforms, including the so called bedroom tax, are forcing council tenants across the country to seek smaller properties.

Rocketing energy bills are also forcing families to reconsider their living arrangements with larger properties becoming more expensive to heat and maintain.

Councillor Steve Waltho, cabinet member for housing in Dudley, believes the event will help tenants swap homes quicker than ever.

He said: “Our housing needs change at different stages in our lives such as when we have a growing family or as we get older.

"Another factor that’s having an impact on people at the moment are the changes brought about by the welfare reforms. "

He added: "Whatever the reasons for moving, our speed matching events provide tenants with the help and support they need to meet other tenants who may want to swap properties or to find out about other housing options.”

The event is taking place at Halesowen Library on Thursday , January 9 from 10am to 6.30pm.

Housing staff will also be on hand to give advice and information about accommodation options and the consequences of the new welfare reforms.

The event is hosted by Dudley Council on behalf of the West Midlands Best Use of Stock (WMBUS) partnership which is made up of local councils and housing associations from the West Midlands.
