GOLD medal Paralympian Ellie Simmonds, who was the youngest recipient of an MBE at just 14, inspired pupils at a Rowley Regis school to be the best they can be.

The swimming star who won four medals in the 2012 London Paralympics and holds 13 world records, made a splash at St Michael’s CE High School.

The 19-year-old held a question and answer session with the all 240 year eight pupils, plus some from year nine and 10 and those with disabilities.

Assistant headteacher Faye Jeffreys said: “Ellie didn’t prepare a speech it was based on the pupils’ questions and she responded very naturally to them. She was absolutely brilliant with them.

“It helped develop their listening, speaking and communication skills and to raise aspirations and encourage them to reach their potential.”

Pupils who have made good progress were treated to a photograph with the paralympian, who passed her medals round for all to see and gave them signed prints of herself.

The visit followed a recent inspirational session given by Paralympic archer Mel Clarke to year nine.
