WORCESTERSHIRE County Council has given the red light to to plan to build a crossing outside a Romsley school despite a petition from residents demanding it.

Nikki Sinclaire MEP has slammed Worcestershire County Council’s decision not to build a school crossing outside St Kenelm's School.

The decision comes following over 500 names on a petition calling for a crossing to be installed on Bromsgrove Road.

Worcestershire County Council, however, will not sanction the new crossing as data shows the number people crossing the road outside of the start and the end of the school day, was “minimal”.

Lynsey Keir, from the council, said: "The gap analysis shows there are adequate gaps in traffic to allow safe crossing of the road.

"The current school crossing patrol provides a crossing facility which reflects the needs of this location so unfortunately we would not pursue a crossing at this location.

Last November, young Luca Pitt was involved in a road traffic accident on the dark road after school hours.

Luca's parent Steve Pitt said: “The decision has been made using one bit of data, it doesn't take into account any other factors, which there are many.

"The road is dangerous to cross, it scares the kids when the crossing patrol is not there."

He added: "Will it take a more serious accident before something is done, we have a chance to do something before that happens”

Nikki Sinclaire, an MEP for the We Demand a Referendum Now party, said: “Clearly, Luca’s story shows that the issue here is one that is outside of school hours and parents have called for a crossing to be built.

"In the dark, this road is a dangerous area. In the early mornings, or after school clubs, children are likely to cross this road and we must do everything we can to keep them safe."

She added: "This shouldn’t be about surveys. This should be about real life experience. Over 500 people want a crossing. Will it take another accident for action to be taken?"

Worcestershire Council are looking into installing flashing warning signs which advise drivers to keep below 20mph near the school.
