FRIENDS gathered to celebrate the 105th birthday of a Halesowen centenarian who is believed to be the town’s most senior citizen.

Nell Cook was presented with flowers and chocolates by fellow members of the over 50s club who threw a party for her at the Zion Christian Centre.

Halesowen and Rowley Regis MP James Morris also called in with flowers and singer Paulo Pinto serenaded the retired shopkeeper.

Miss Cook was born in Deritend, Birmingham, and worked in the family shop from leaving school until her retirement.

She moved to Halesowen 21 years ago and has been a regular at the fortnightly club for the 13 years it has been in existence. Prior to that, she attended the club run by the Lighthouse Project at the centre.

Club founder Dorothy Clarke said Miss Cook always spoke fondly of her parents and five siblings.

She said: “Nell is marvellous – she absolutely loves coming to the club and catches the ring and ride bus. She can hear fine and doesn’t even walk with a stick.”
