THE Friends of Coombeswood Wedge has given the Halesowen beauty spot a spring clean after getting a cash windfall.

Volunteers descended on Coombeswood over the weekend to rid the park of countless items from sweet wrappers to settees during a massive litter pick.

The Halesowen North and South Community Forum donated £442 to the Friends to their quest to ensure the wildlife and habitat in the wedge can thrive.

The group bought bow saws, forks, spades, litter pickers, cleaning goods and a huge supply of bin bags with the money which will also be used to improve footpaths throughout and approaching the wedge.

Friends spokesman Sue Yeadon believes local residents will soon notice the improvements.

She said: "With the help of the local community forum, we are in a position to significantly improve public access to the wedge and help manage its diverse habitats which a wealth of wildlife relies on.

"Further work parties will be organised in the near future and new volunteers are always very welcome."

Halesowen North CouncillorJeff Hill took part in the giant litter pick and backed the forum's donation.

He said: "The friends have done a great job in protecting Coombeswood Wedge over the years and the community forum funding will help them continue this work."

The wedge spans over 100 acres, some of which include the old Coombeswood tube works, and includes areas of scientific interest as well as habitats which support a number of red status listed butterflies, moths and birds.

Many of the hedgerows and woodland date back to ancient times and the footpath leading down from the farm is believed to be over 1000 years old and part of an ancient drovers route originating from Wales.

Cllr Hill said: "The wedge is a wonderful place which is on the doorstep and a fantastic place to visit.

"I urge people to see the wildlife for themselves, I saw a kestrel during the litter pick and it was beautiful."
