ICONIC British comedy Fawlty Towers is being tackled by Halesowen's Mayhem Theatre Company.

The trails and tribulations of hotel owner Basil Fawlty, played by John Cleese, were wildly popular when first aired on BBC in the 1970s and the sitcom has been voted Britain's favourite comedy.

Basil, his long-suffering wife Sybil, clumsy waiter Manuel and pretty waitress Polly will all be featured in An Evening With Fawlty Towers at The Hardwicke Theatre, Thorns Community College, Quarry Bank.

Mark Moran, founder of Mayhem Theatre Company, said: "We have put together the best cast we have ever had in any production for An Evening With Fawlty Towers.

"And the set iwe have built is West End Standard so we cannot wait to get started."

The show will run from Wednesday, April 30, until Saturday, May 3.

Mr Moran said: "Due to its iconic status it is difficult for any drama group to attempt Fawlty Towers and if there is not the talent to have a great Basil, Sybil, Manuel and Polly then there is no point trying.

"But we have got the talent to fill the big roles so we are really pushing the boat out for this production and hopefully the audiences will respond."

Only 12 episodes of Fawlty Towers were ever filmed, the first being aired in 1975 and the last in 1979 all episodes have been repeated constantly over the last 35 years.
