A HEALTHCARE worker, from Cradley, is gearing up for a gruelling cycle challenge to help fight HIV in Africa.
Stephen Greenaway, an assistant at Dartmouth Clinic - Sandwell Hospital’s sexual health clinic – is planning a solo 138-mile cycle ride from Cradley Heath to Pwllheli in Wales.
The 38-year-old, of Colley Lane, said: “I had nothing to do with HIV until I started at Dartmouth. Now I have got to know the patients and their stories and have been reading about some awful stories in Africa.”
The bike ride aims to raise £750 for Mr Greenaway’s trip to Kenya with HIV charity Cricket Without Boundaries, which aims to challenge myths and educate people in Africa about HIV through playing cricket.
He plans to ride without the aid of a fellow rider or support vehicle, meaning if his bike breaks he will have to fix it himself.
Mr Greenaway said: “The kids in Kenya struggle in their everyday lives, so in their honour, I believe that my ride shouldn’t be made easier either.”
His cycle challenge is set for August 2 and 3 before going to Kenya in September.
