THE retiring chief-executive of Dudley Council got a taste of things to come when he volunteered at a Halesowen sheltered housing complex.

John Polychronakis, aged 61, served drinks, biscuits and conversation at a coffee morning at Bealah Court as part of Volunteers' month.

The out-going chief, who last week announced he is leaving his £157,000 position, also ran a literature-themed quiz and charades game at the Stourbridge Road complex yesterday (Wednesday).

He said: “I’ve had great fun today.

"The Royal Voluntary Service does an amazing job helping older people to get the best out of life and I’ve really enjoyed getting involved."

He added: “I’d advise anyone with even the smallest amount of time on their hands to volunteer for a good cause. Not only does it benefit others who will appreciate your help, but you will also have a good time.”

Kirsty McGarvey, service manager at Royal Voluntary Service, who dressed up as Red Riding Hood for the literature-themed event, added:

“It’s been wonderful having John with us today.

"He got totally stuck in and was a big hit with the residents."

She added: "At RVS we depend upon volunteers to provide the wide level of services that we run for older people."

Miss McGarvey outlined the importance of the RVS work with old people across the borough.

She said: "We believe that old age should be celebrated and that everyone should feel valued or involved, no matter what their age.

"If you have any time to spare please consider volunteering for us.”

Beulah Court is managed by Dudley Council and provides housing and extra care for its elderly residents.
