Fun day in memory of Oldbury cancer mum

A CHARITY fun day at a Halesowen pub is set to raise money in memory of young mum Jessica Evans, who died from cervical cancer.

Friends and family of the 22-year-old, from Oldbury, are collecting for a trust fund for her son Riley, aged two, and to buy a memorial bench.

Organiser Wayne Brown said the event at the Full Moon, Hurst Green Road, on Sunday (June 29), from 1pm until 6pm, will include live entertainment, games, go-carting and an arts and crafts stall.

He said: “We are hoping for a good turnout. All are welcome to come and support the cause.”

A Justice for Jess campaign has also been launched calling for the 25 year minimum age at which smear tests are allowed to be lowered.

Jess was refused the test nine times before she was diagnosed, but it was then too late to save her and she died in February.

The Department of Health guidelines were drawn up because there is a one in three chance of a false positive result in females under 25 and the screening test is not considered diagnostic and so not appropriate for women with symptoms.
