MORE than 1,500 volunteers have taken part in scores of spring clean events across Sandwell.

The Big Spring Clean encourages people to take part in litter picking and small-scale environmental improvements.

More than 50 events have taken place so far in the campaign which has the theme 40 – marking the 40th anniversary of the creation of Sandwell as a borough.

Run by the council, waste management company Serco and the Litter Watch charity, it is targeting more than 40 miles of litter picking on pavements, planting 40 trees, working with 40 schools and painting 40 metres of fencing and railings across the borough.

Councillor Maria Crompton, cabinet member for highways and environment said: “Residents have shown an amazing sense of pride over the years, generously donating their time to help improve neighbourhoods, parks, canal paths and open spaces.

“Getting involved with the Big Spring Clean is a great way not only to help improve your local area, but also to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Sandwell.”

Since its launch in April, in excess of 300 bags of litter have been collected and more than 150 plants have been planted. A mixture of community groups, schools and businesses have taken part with many more events planned.

Volunteers can decide what they would like to do on their Big Spring Clean event including litter picking, graffiti removal, planting, painting and supporting local wildlife.

The campaign runs until October. To get involved call 0121 544 3916, email bigspringclean.sandwell@serco.com or visit www.sandwell.gov.uk/bigspringclean.
