RESIDENTS and councillors are dismayed that a failed bid to open a hand car wash in the car park of a Halesowen pub has been resurrected.

People living near the Full Moon, Hurst Green Road, were relieved to hear the application had been refused by planners in March.

It was thrown out because of insufficient information being supplied by applicant Qamil Aliaj to assess the scale, intensity and drainage capacity of the facility but a fresh application has been submitted.

The plan has sparked renewed objections from residents who fear it will be unsightly, out of character for the mainly residential area and create a traffic hazard.

Halesowen North councillors Karen Shakespeare and Stuart Henley have organised petitions which have been signed by more than 150 people and neighbours have sent their own objections to the planning department.

Cllr Shakespeare said: “It’s absolutely dreadful. It is not at all an appropriate location for a car wash.

“I have written to development control asking for it to go to the committee for a decision and to speak on behalf of residents.”

Cllr Shakespeare and other objectors claim an increase in traffic could lead to accidents as parked cars already obscure the view of motorists turning from Merrivale Road from being able to see vehicles approaching along Roundhills Road from Hurst Green Road.

She said it was likely vehicles would queue on the road to use the car wash, adding to the traffic hazard and congestion.

The Full Moon pub is also a Balti restaurant and protesters fear customers will be forced to park on nearby residential streets.

Objectors also believe it will create excess noise and an eyesore view for neighbouring properties.

Cllr Shakespeare added: “I hope the committee will listen to the objections. Fingers crossed for the sake of residents.”
