BEATLES fans will be able to get a vivid reminder of Yesterday 51 years after the Fab Four performed at the legendary Plaza Ballroom in Old Hill.

The owners of the Platinum Plaza, previously known as the Old Hill Plaza, are bringing back live music to the venue and have booked tribute band Like The Beatles to recapture the magic of January 11 and July 5, 1963.

Riding high in the charts with their debut album Please Please Me The Beatles played to packed and screaming audiences at two gigs which have gone down in Black Country music history.

Arun Bangar, from Platinum Plaza, is hoping original audience members of the 1963 concerts attend the Like The Beatles show to reminisce.

He said: "The Old Hill Plaza is famous was famous across the Black Country for hosting the likes of The Beatles, The Animals, The Rolling Stones and many other famous names from the 1960s.

"I am now planning to revive this feel to the Plaza by hosting a number of acts and I am starting off with Like The Beatles because their gigs in Old Hill are so famous."

He added: "It should be a great night on Saturday, October 4 as Like The Beatles are doing very well, they have 250,000 likes on Facebook and have performed on the television and radio."

Unlike the real John, Paul, George and Ringo the tribute band will not have to play a gig in Handsworth beforehand which kept the baying fans waiting on their idols.

Former ELO drummer Bev Bevan was the drummer playing with Denny Laine and the Diplomats as the warm up act for The Beatles for the second gig.

He said: "The crowd was huge, they were literally hanging from the rafters, they were very good to us and many of our own fans were in the audience.

"Nevertheless we still got the occasional chant of ”We want The Beatles, we want The Beatles” from the dominantly female crowd."

He added: "Unsurprisingly, the were running late from their gig in Handsworth and our scheduled half-hour spot became an hour or more.

"Then we saw them all watching us from the side of the stage. We finished our set, the curtains closed, the crowd now in a state of nervous, near hysterical anticipation."

The Halesowen Road venue, which was run by husband and wife team Joe and Mary Ma Regan in its 1960s hey day, also had a part to play in the story of Led Zeppelin.

The band's frontman Robert Plant first met drummer John Bonham at the venue before going on to conquering the world.

Sadly the tickets for the gig will not be 8s/6d (42.5p) but £15, for more information visit www.platinumplaza.co.uk.
