A FORMER police station in Oldbury is set to be the new home for one of the oldest brass bands in the country.

The renowned Langley Band has lodged an application into Sandwell Council to transform the Station Road building into its new home.

The building was a social club before becoming a police station in 1999 but in 2011 the police moved out and it has been unoccupied ever since.

A spokesman for the band said: "The Langley Band would use the building for rehearsals on a Monday and Wednesday night between 8pm and 10pm.

"And about three times a year there will be extra practices for contests during the week and weekends and extra practice on occasions with guest conductors."

The band will also store its instruments in the building and does not envisage more than 30 people being there at one time.

The Langley Band was formed 136 years ago in 1878 and and boasts 28 musicians from across the West Midlands, led by

musical director Cliff Parker, who has directed the band since 2002.
