A COUNCILLOR has swapped the council chamber for the recording studio to raise cash for a charity that supports carers across the borough.

Councillor Ian Marrey, who represents Wollaston and Stourbridge Town, has released the charity single, Set Me Free, under his stage name The Saturday Boy.

He wrote and recorded the folk song himself and will donate all proceeds to the Brierley Hill based charity We Love Carers.

Describing the song, he said: "It is about saying goodbye to a loved one. Despite the potentially depressing subject it is meant to be a positive farewell, someone who has accepted their next step."

Cllr Marrey said he chose the charity as he knows firsthand how it helps unpaid carers and their families across Dudley.

He continued: "As a parent of a profoundly disabled young son I have been impressed by the vision, dedication and support provided by We Love Carers.

"They rely on fundraising and donations to keep going and to develop their services. I hope the proceeds from this single will provide a small donation to help the work they do."

Lorraine Stockton, the charity's project co-ordinator, said she thought the song was "brilliant".

She added: "We think he is very talented and we are honoured that he's put the single out for us."

The single, which costs 99p, can be downloaded at www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B00QRDST98.
