TALENTED Halesowen nursery childen hit the high notes when they joined in a record breaking global rendition of John Lennon's iconic song Imagine.

The children at Merryvale Nursery joined the Beatle's widow Yoko Ono and a host of celebrities including Hugh Jackman, Katy Perry and David Guetta singing the peace anthem to raise awareness of children's rights.

The worldwide sing-a-long event was organised by UNICEF to mark the 25th anniversary of the Convention on the Rights of the Child.

UNICEF children’s champion Dr Lynsey Melville got Merryvale Nursery involved in the project.

She said: "I have been working with children at Merryvale Nursery talking about climate change and the impact it has on children in other countries.

UNICEF currently have a campaign to have the largest ever global sing-a-long of John Lennon’s Imagine which will be released before New Year.

"Its a poignant time of year to be thinking about those less fortunate than ourselves."

She added: "It has been lovely working with the children at Merryvale nursery who, even in their primitive years, understand the relationship between our day to day activities and the impacts they have on our planet and children in developing countries."

The schoolchildren's recordings, and those of UNICEF’s Ambassadors and other artists, will be made into a multi-lingual ‘world’ version of Imagine, produced by superstar DJ David Guetta.

And everyone recorded the song has the chance to have their vocals and videos used in the new UNICEF version of Imagine and in the accompanying interactive music video New Year’s Eve 2014.

Dr Melville said: "We had great fun recording our version of the song and we will be showed Councillor Hilary Bills from Dudley Council on Thursday and presented her with a picture of the children to raise awareness about the campaign."

Anthony Lake, from UNICEF, said: “The Convention on the Rights of the Child asked us all to imagine a better world for children – and calls on all of us to make that vision a reality.

“The Imagine project gives people across the globe a chance to join a global movement for children, lending their ideas, their visions and, not least, their voices to advance the rights of every child, everywhere.”
