A HALESOWEN man today  pleaded guilty to causing the death of an Oldbury student in a collision in Quinton last year.

Sukvinder Mannan was arrested after the Mitsubishi he was driving careered into a bus stop in Hagley Road West where Rebecca McManus was waiting to travel into Birmingham to attend a friend’s hen party.

Twenty-one-year-old Rebecca died at the scene on Saturday May 31, while a friend, who was also aged 21, was seriously hurt.

Rebecca had just finished a three-year English literature and creative writing degree at the University of East Anglia and was due to graduate the following month.

Sales rep Mannan, aged 33, was taken into custody and later charged with causing death by dangerous driving and causing serious injury through dangerous driving.

A second man, Inderjit Singh, was later arrested at his home in Cranbourne Avenue, Wolverhampton, and was also charged with both offences.

Singh, aged 30, is alleged to have been driving a second car which was travelling along Hagley Road West at the same time as Mannan’s Mitsubishi when it collided with the bus stop.

Mannan, of Roundhills Road, also faced a charge of failing to provide a blood sample following the crash, while computer engineer Singh faces a separate count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident.

Mannan appeared before Wolverhampton Crown Court this morning where he entered a guilty plea to all counts. He was remanded on bail prior to sentencing on a date to be fixed.

The case against Singh has been adjourned for further reports and a hearing has been set for Monday May 18.
