AFZAL Amin has quit as Conservative candidate for Dudley North amid mounting pressure after newspaper allegations he planned fake EDL protests in Dudley.

The BBC is reporting Tory party sources have confirmed he is standing down as their candidate in the marginal seat.

Mr Amin has faced a torrent of criticism after allegations he planned to gain votes in the general election by taking credit for the cancellation of a phantom protest which was never going to happen.

He has been suspended as a Tory candidate and was due to face a party enquiry tomorrow.

A Conservative Party spokeman said: “Afzal Amin is resigning as Conservative candidate for Dudley North with immediate effect.

“Conservative Chairman Grant Shapps  has welcomed Mr Amin’s decision and thanked him for his work in the past.”

The party will now begin the process of finding a new candidate, the planned hearing by the party to ask Mr Afzal to explain his contact with the EDL will now not take place.

Mr Amin denies any wrongdoing.
