MANCHESTER UNITED star Darren Fletcher reckons the Tartan Army are at their best at midweek international matches.

The Scotland star can't wait to walk out at the National Stadium tonight with the home crowd backing George Burley's men to the hilt.

And he hopes they can help make a difference when their 2010 World Cup dreams on the line. Fletcher said: "It's hard to compare Hampden with Old Trafford, which is a truly fabulous arena. However, I do feel night games like this against Iceland make the stadium much more special.

"The anthem, the fireworks and walking out to the road of the crowd - it makes your hair stand on end. My first memory of Hampden was actually going to watch Celtic play there the season Parkhead was renovated.

"The thing that I remember as a boy, though, was the nick of the pitch. Growing up we always seemed to play on mud so to see such lush grass was incredible."

Fletcher will win his 42nd cap against Iceland, and he knows his team-mates have got to find a way to take all three points from the game.

After having gone down 3-0 to Holland at the weekend, the Scotland players all agree that tonight is a must-win match if they are to reach the play-offs as one of the best placed second placed teams from the group sections.

"We are all really looking forward to the match," said Fletcher. "It's your home games that you've got to try and make count during any qualification campaign.

"We have three remaining and we have got to try and pick up as many points as we possibly can form those matches.

"However, we are well aware that Iceland will be difficult opponents. They have a lot of experienced players and I'm sure it will be more of a British game than anything else.

"That said, it's up to us to create chances and make sure we are positive form the first whistle."
