REBEL prison officers in Glasgow abandoned plans to stage an illegal walk-out today in a row over pay.

Guards at Barlinnie Prison had threatened to cause major disruption by going on strike along with colleagues at Saughton jail in Edinburgh.

Instead union leaders were today preparing for crisis talks with management tomorrow with the help of mediators from the conciliation service, Acas.

Officers have been offered a pay deal worth 3.1% but are furious because their supervisors are being lined up for whopping wage hikes of between 5% and 31%.

A ballot conducted by the Scottish Prison Officers Association among 3000 members resulted in 95% voting against the pay offer.

Rebel officers then made it known they were set to stage a wildcat strike today even though prison staff are banned by law from taking industrial action.

Union leaders were forced to warn members any illegal action could result in them being sacked with no claim for unfair dismissal.

A SPOA official today said: "The offer was rejected by 95% of members and we are now going to Acas."

Both sides will resume negotiations tomorrow in a bid to find a resolution.
