A PAIN-wracked Rowley Regis woman leapt to her death from Asda’s multi-storey car in Halesowen on Good Friday to end her suffering.

Grandmother and mother-of-two Sandra Garratt was devastated after doctors told her there was nothing they could do to ease the all-consuming pain she had suffered for two years.

The 56-year-old was left in constant pain after back surgery at Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, which even the strongest painkillers, including morphine, failed to relieve.

He distraught husband Steve, who gave up his job as a community transport driver last year to care for his wife, said: “She was a happy, lovely person, but withdrew from her happy family life.

“She was in pain every minute of every day - she could get no rest and was desperate for some relief.”

Her pain worsened in the last 18 months of her life and for several months had been excruciating, spreading to her legs, feet and fingers.

The couple saw doctors at the Priory and QE hospitals last Tuesday and Mr Garratt said she was “very distressed” to be told they could do no more.

He said: “Before there had always been hope, but when they said there was nothing they could do, it was the final straw.”

Mrs Garratt said she was “popping out” on Friday, but anxious for her well-being he called the police in the afternoon and at 5.30pm was given the news of her death.

Police and ambulance crews were called to the Asda car park at the Cornbow Shopping Centre at 2.35pm following a report a woman had fallen from the multi storey car park.

A West Midlands Police spokesman said Mrs Garratt was taken to hospital but pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Mr Garratt, aged 57, said: “Everybody says the same – she is now free from the pain. That’s the only bit of comfort.”

He added: “The doctors and GPS, within the scope of the NHS with waiting lists and everything that goes on, did everything they could.”

Mrs Garratt, who was a housewife, leaves a daughter Lucy, aged 37, son Jonathan, aged 26, and two grandchildren Joshua and Jessica.

The coroner has been informed of her death, but here are no suspicious circumstances.
