CENTENARY celebrations at Romsley’s St Kenelm’s Primary School have been marked this week with the burying of a time capsule.

Three previous headteachers gathered with current staff and pupils for the ceremonial burying in the school grounds.

Items placed in the capsule included children’s work about the last 100 years, school newsletters, photographs, coins, a centenary wristband, and staff list.

A mosaic tile from a cross made as part of the Church of England school’s centenary celebrations was also included.

The capsule, which is to be opened in 100 years, was buried by members of the School Council and headteacher Suzanne Shackleton welcomed predecessors Jane Woakes, Hazel Gommersall and Maureen Burns to the event.

Other guests included governors, PTA members, Worcestershire County Council officers, staff and deputy headteacher Denise Finnie, who reaches her own milestone this summer, retiring after 25 years at the school.

St Kenelm’s was opened on April 12 1915 and children spent last week learning lots about the last 100 years, including the First World War, school uniforms and fashion through the ages.

A centenary lunch was held and the week’s celebrations concluded with the children’s families being invited into school for prayers, followed by a presentation of work by pupils and performances by each year group of songs and dances from each decade over the last 100 years.

An exhibition of the children’s centenary work was opened for parents to view, whilst the pupils enjoyed a slice of a huge celebration cake which was baked and iced by one of the parents.
