THE support given by the Marches Local Enterprise Partnership for dualling the Carrington Bridge at a cost of £70 million demonstrates how with local enterprise partnerships the end justifies the means no matter what the inconvenience to others.

It does not seem to have occurred to them that many millions of pounds were spent in constructing the M50 and M5 in order to enable heavy vehicles to cross Worcestershire without clogging-up towns and villages en route.

As it is, many lorries and transporters already try to save 30 miles by driving through Malvern, causing congestion and danger to other road users.

The consequence on the Malvern to Worcester road of encouraging more lorries to use this shortcut, combined with increased traffic once new housing estates are completed close to Malvern, should be considered the top priority before planners throw any more money at improving the crossing of the Severn.
